SJB’s Marikkar takes swipe at NPP’s India visit

The Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) MP S.M. Marikkar yesterday took a swipe at the JVP-led National People’s Power (NPP) noting that it was strange to see a political party which earlier shouted hoarse about a so-calledIndian expansionism engaging in an official visit to that country.

On a sarcastic note Marikkar said, “We are happy to see a group which shouted about an Indian expansionism, started an insurrection in 1971, chased away investors and extorted money from them now going to India and meeting investors there.”

He was speaking at a press conference held at the Opposition Leader’s office yesterday.

“A group that destroyed the future of the country’s youth went to India. The JVP sent back a group of investors who brought investments of nearly Rs.450 billion to Sri Lanka under the Yali Pubudamu Sri Lanka programme in 2001, which has also contributed to the bankruptcy of the country’s economy today,” the SJB MP said.

“If they would have taken steps to restructure the state institutions and implement the Yali Pubudama Sri Lanka programme in 2001, the economic growth of Sri Lanka would definitely have increased today.

The JVP is still learning about the benefits of Indian investments and the benefits of joining with investors. The JVP is trying to be the main opposition today and that is clear from NPP Leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake’s recent visit to India,” Marikkar said.
