The Head of Mission of Sri Lanka to the European Union, Ambassador Grace Asirwatham paid a farewell call on the Chair of the Friends of Sri Lanka Group in the European Parliament, Member of Parliament Tomas Zdechovsky from the Czech Republic, who represents the European People’s Party (EPP), the largest party in the European Parliament, on November 28, at the Parliament premises in Brussels.
During the meeting, Ambassador Asirwatham expressed her sincere appreciation for Zdechovsky’s unwavering support for Sri Lanka and his dedicated leadership to the informal friendship group, which serves as a crucial support base within the European Parliament.
She highlighted the group’s pivotal role in comprehending the current situation in Sri Lanka, particularly during the challenging times of the economic crisis, and its understanding of the need to continue the provision of the GSP Plus facility to Sri Lanka
Ambassador Asirwatham commended Zdechovsky’s profound understanding of South Asia, with a particular emphasis on Sri Lanka’s unique needs and the imperative of support for economies facing vulnerabilities.
In response, Zdechovsky commended Ambassador Asirwatham for her outstanding dedication to maintaining the active engagement of the Friends of Sri Lanka Group and her effective efforts to promote Sri Lanka’s interests within the European Parliament.
The farewell meeting symbolized the strong bond between Sri Lanka and the European Parliament, acknowledging the crucial role played by MEP Zdechovsky and expressing gratitude for his continuous support.
The Friends of Sri Lanka Group in the European Parliament is an informal group of MEPs who support Sri Lanka in the EU Parliament on an issue basis. It was initially established in 2006 and re-launched twice thereafter: when a new Parliament was elected in 2019 and after Brexit in 2022.
