SLCS conducts 14 breast cancer awareness programmes

The Sri Lanka Cancer Society (SLCS) will conduct 14 breast cancer awareness programmes countrywide during the month of October to coincide with the international Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

The SLCS is the country’s pioneer social service organisation that conducts a large number of cancer awareness programmes in schools, public and private sector institutions and also community centres to educate young and old people on the dangerous situation of cancers.

According to statistics global cancer deaths in 2040 would go up to 16.3 million and cancers could be prevented with early detection. The World Health Organisation (WHO) reveals around 2.3 million females diagnosed with breast cancer every year.

The SLCS will conduct its first breast cancer programme today (8) at University Grants Commission (UGC) auditorium, while three other programmes will be conducted at Sarvodaya branch offices in Galle, Matara and Hambantota on October 9, 10 and 11.

The SLCS has also organised Breast Cancer awareness programmes at Ceylon Chamber of Commerce auditorium on October 18 and at MAS Intimates Ltd, Biyagama and Ratmalana.

Speaking to the Daily News SLCS, Public Education Officer Merril Perera said Breast Cancer affects nearly 4,000 women in Sri Lanka every year.

He also highlighted the breast cancers of women and said the SLCS also conducts seminars for young girls on how to prevent breast cancers.

He highlighted major signs of breast cancers as lumps in the breast, a change in breast shape, dimpling or irritation of the breast skin, swelling of all parts of the breast.

Merril Perera also said that tobacco and passive smoking causes many cancers in the human body.

He advised people to consume more fruits, vegetables and grains and also engaged in physical exercises to reduce the risk of getting cancers.
