SLPA felicitates veteran journalists

The Sri Lanka Press Association (SLPA) last week felicitated veteran journalists for their incomparable contribution to the field of journalism at the SLPA’s 68th anniversary convention held at the BMICH recently.

The ceremony was held under the patronage of Transport, Highways and Mass Media Minister Dr. Bandula Gunawardhana. Professor of Sinhala Department, University of Colombo, Sandagomi Coperahewa delivered the keynote address.

Former Dinamina Editor Pushpa Rowel, Karunarathne Amarasinghe, S. Kaneshan, Tulin Jayarathne, Shan Wickremesinghe, Christopher Kamalendran, Mohomad Thajudeen, Lambert Pemmawadu, Kamal Liyanarachchi and Pushpakumara Mathugama were felicitated at this ceremony.

The SLPA was formed by Ven. Udakendawala Siri Saranankara Thera on October 9, 1955, as the Ceylon Branch of IOJ (International Organisation of Journalists) and was later renamed as Ceylon Press Association by the stalwarts D.F. Kariyakarawana and Hema de Silva in 1957.

The SLPA has come a long wayr due to the life it was given by the original members. Among them were Ven. Udakendawala Siri Saranankara Thera, Hema De Silva, D.F. Kariyakarawana, Piyasena Nissanka, D.B. Dhanapala, Edwin Ariyadasa, B.A. Siriwardana, Meemana Premathilake, Mervin de Silva, U.L.D. Chandrathilake, Newton Seneviratne, Evans Cooray, Lakshman Jayawardene, B.H.S. Jayawardene, Eamon Kariyakarawana, J.B. Dissanayake, Sirimal Fonseka and several others. Indonesian envoy in Colombo Dewi Gustina Tobing and a team of journalists from India also participated.
