The Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) has met with officials of the US Embassy in Sri Lanka to raise concerns over what the party alleges is a deterioration of democracy and misuse of legal provisions under the current government.
Speaking to reporters following the visit to the US Embassy yesterday, SLPP General Secretary Sagara Kariyawasam said the meeting was the first step in a programme planned by the party to brief foreign diplomatic missions in Sri Lanka on its concerns.
Kariyawasam said the SLPP intends to visit other embassies over the coming days to present its position on what it describes as the government’s undermining of democratic practices and misuse of laws.
He alleged that certain legal provisions were being used to remand individuals instead of filing cases against them.
According to Kariyawasam, the party will continue its programme of briefing diplomatic missions on these concerns. (Newswire)
