Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, the leader of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) yesterday said his party will contest the upcoming General Election, but it will not join a proposed alliance by the United National Party (UNP).
Rajapaksa emphasised that his party is fully prepared for the upcoming election.
He was addressing the media at SLPP head office in Battaramulla following a meeting of the SLPP political commitee.
Rajapaksa said the SLPP political committee discussed the results of the last election as well as SLPP preparations for the upcoming elections. Mahinda Rajapaksa further stated that the result of this year’s Presidential election is the opinion of the people and the SLPP accepts the people’s verdict.
He noted that SLPP will further discuss how to win back people’s support at the upcoming elections as a party.
Rajapaksa said that the SLPP has not made a decision so far on whether to support the current President and added that however he believes that the current President Anura Kumara Dissanayake is capable of ruling the country. The SLPP leader also said that the party discussed whether to take back those who left the party as there are many requests in this regard.
He said however it has been decided not to bring back anyone who has been accused of corruption into the party fold.
