Sri Lanka were not considered for the virtual official draw of the 19th Asian Games Men’s Seven-A-side Rugby Tournament, which took place yesterday.
Sri Lanka Rugby (SLR) are currently going through a suspension from the world governing body but there were hopes that the island nation would compete at this event under the National Olympic Committee (NOC) Flag following a confirmation from World Rugby and the Sports Ministry.
The 19th Asian Games Rugby Sevens event will take place on September 24 to 26 at the Normal University Cangqian Athletics Field in Hangzhou, China.
Meanwhile, the Executive Director of SLR Hasan Singhawansa said that he is surprised with this draw as they were given a confirmation of Sri Lanka’s participation at this event by WR, IOC and the Sports Ministry last month.
The teams that will participate in the tournament are Hong Kong, Philippines, Nepal, Korea, Malaysia, Chinese Taipei, Japan, Singapore, Thailand, UAE, China and Afghanistan.
