SLRC award-winning journalist who used AI recognised

Secretary of the Ministry of Mass Media Anusha Palpita presented a financial reward yesterday (10), to Gamini Bandara Menikdiwela, who won the award for the Best Investigative News in Asia and the award for the Best Journalist at an international awards ceremony, in appreciation of a programme that was broadcasted on Rupavahini using AI.

On learning of his acheivements a Sri Lankan living in Dubai had sent a cash prize to Transport, Highways and Mass Media Minister Dr. Bandula Gunawardhana. It was yesterday awarded to Gamini Bandara Menikdiwela by Anusha Palpita, Secretary of the Ministry of Mass Media in recognition of his contribution to the use of AI in television media and his contribution to drawing the audience’s attention to it.

Menikdiwela received the award for the Best Journalist of the Year at the ‘Eminence’ Awards ceremony held in the United Arab Emirates in 2023. Later he produced this programme using AI for the news department while he was on a trip to the UAE for an educational opportunity he had received.

The discussion held with Manoj Bogoda, President of UUDS, United Arab Emirates, for the Sihina saba karana Dubai programme, was agreed to be produced through AI ChatGPT.

Accordingly, the programme was aired on Rupavahini on June 4, 2023 and the national television Rupavahini was praised on social media for broadcasting the programme.

Minister of Transport, Highways and Mass Media Dr. Bandula Gunawardhana, who paid attention to this, made arrangements to present a financial reward that he had received as a cash prize, to the producer of the programme, Menikdiwela, from the Secretary of the Ministry of Mass Media Anusha Palpita, yesterday (10). Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation Chairman Dr. Prasad Samarasinghe, Director News Indika Marasinghe and others attended this event.
