The Executive Committee of the Sri Lanka Schools Rugby Football Association (SLSRFA) have decided to conduct a comprehensive inquiry into the incident, which occurred soon after the Inter-Schools Under-20 ‘A’ Division League Rugby Tournament match between Vidyartha College and Isipathana College on Friday at the Nittawela Stadium in Kandy.
The Isipathana players came under heavy attack as they were allegedly assaulted by the opposition players and a section of spectators, moments after the visitors pulled off a hard-fought 25-23 victory.
This win also helped Isipathana to make it five wins from five outings as they qualified for the Super Round stage of this 12-team tournament with an unbeaten record while Vidyartha bowed out having recorded three victories from five matches.
Isipathana had five casualties after the nightmare incident with three of them suffering serious injuries and two players escaped with minor injuries.
However, a spokesman for Isipathana said all five players are out of danger and will begin their training this week in preparation for their opening Super Round game during the weekend.
Meanwhile, an official of the SLSRFA said that the host team is responsible for the security at the venue and some of the Vidyartha players and officials are in danger of being suspended for a lengthy period.
