Southwest monsoon: rains across several areas today

The southwest monsoon has now established over Sri Lanka, bringing continued showery weather to the south-western parts of the island, the Department of Meteorology said.

Showers or thundershowers are expected at times in Western, Sabaragamuwa and North-western provinces, as well as in the Galle, Matara, Kandy and Nuwara Eliya districts. Fairly heavy rainfall exceeding 75 mm is likely in some areas.

A few showers or thundershowers may also occur after 1 p.m. in Uva Province and in the Ampara and Batticaloa districts.

Fairly strong winds of 30 to 40 kmph are expected at times over the western slopes of the central hills and in the Northern, North-central, North-western and Southern provinces, as well as in the Trincomalee District.

The public has been advised to take precautions against temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

At sea, showers or thundershowers are expected in sea areas extending from Puttalam to Hambantota via Colombo and Galle, while isolated showers may occur in other sea areas around the island during the evening or night.

Winds over sea areas will be southwesterly with speeds of 30 to 40 kmph, increasing up to 50 to 60 kmph at times in sea areas from Kankasanthurai to Chilaw via Mannar and from Matara to Pottuvil via Hambantota.

Sea areas off these coasts are expected to be rough at times, while other sea areas around the island will be fairly rough. Wave heights may increase to between 2 and 3 meters in sea areas off the coast from Hambantota to Pottuvil.

The Meteorology Department warned that temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas can be expected during thundershowers. (Newswire)
