Education Minister Dr. Susil Premajayantha said 75 percent of the school textbook printing order undertaken by the State Printing Corporation (SPC) has been completed by now and it has been possible to start distributing textbooks needed by schools for the coming year.

Meanwhile, plans have been made to expand the school mid-day meal programme for primary classes from next year and provide it to some other classes also, he said.

He added that 1,500 leading schools are digitised soon, under a project scheduled to start next month. Accordingly the school system will be digitalised in three years. Under the new education reforms, the necessary textbooks are being printed now. Of the requirement 60 percent were given to the private sector while the balance is handled by the SPC, for printing.

The printing will be completed by next January, he added. The SPC, which had lost Rs.1,200 million had made a profit of Rs.2,000 million by last year, he noted. Speaking on the trade union action to work to rule by several teacher trade unions the minister said that he is happy to hear that teachers are doing so.

“Now the teachers are busy as they are engaged in a ‘work to rule’ campaign. It is better to work hard in school. I would like to thank the teachers union leaders for teaching from 7.30 to 1.30 for two weeks. There is nothing to do but teach these days,” he added.
