Speaker cracks whip on errant MPs

Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena yesterday warned that stern action would be taken against the Parliamentarians who use mobile phones and electronic devices to record house proceedings and release them to the media in a way that disturbs the proceedings of the House.

The Speaker made this observation recommencing the proceedings. The Speaker temporarily adjourned the proceedings of the House due to the heated situation that erupted in the House when the Leader of the Opposition made a statement under Standing Order 27/2 yesterday morning.

“According to the powers assigned to me under Standing Orders 146 of the Parliament, I emphasize to this House that the proceedings of the House should never be recorded using mobile phones and electronic devices and released to the electronic media and social media,” the Speaker announced.

The Speaker further announced that if any MP behaves in violation of this law and disturbs the affairs of the House, strict disciplinary action will be taken against them.

Regarding the disruption of the Opposition Leader’s speech, Chief Opposition Whip Lakshman Kiriella, requested that the necessary punishment be given according to the Standing Orders.

The Speaker said that the cooperation of the Opposition and the ruling party is needed and everyone should be held responsible for this mistake and the necessary steps will be taken after considering the facts in this regard.
