Special wildlife protection operation removes illegal traps in Kurunegala

A two-day operation to identify and remove illegal hunting devices and firearms posing a threat to wild elephants and other wildlife was successfully conducted on October 6 and 7 in three selected Grama Niladhari divisions within the Galgamuwa Divisional Secretariat Division, under the jurisdiction of the Kurunegala Assistant Director of Wildlife Conservation.

Nearly 60 officers from the Department of Wildlife Conservation, the Civil Security Department and the Special Task Force participated in the operation.

During the operation, officers removed a large number of animal traps and hakka patas — explosive devices used to injure or kill animals — placed around tank beds and scrubland areas.

In parallel raids, several suspects were arrested for possessing illegal firearms, hakka patas, traps, game meat and animal parts.

The Department of Wildlife Conservation said it plans to continue similar operations, prioritizing other areas frequented by wild elephants, to identify and remove illegal hunting devices and strengthen wildlife protection efforts. (Newswire)
