Sports Minister suspends cycling and badminton bodies, appoints transformation committees

Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Sunil Kumara Gamage has issued two Extraordinary Gazette notifications temporarily suspending the registrations of the Cycling Federation of Sri Lanka and Sri Lanka Badminton.

The Gazette notifications, dated October 20, 2026, were issued under Sections 32 and 33 of the Sports Law, No. 25 of 1973, as amended.

The Minister has appointed separate transformation committees to oversee the administration and restructuring of the two sporting bodies.

According to the Gazettes, the committees have been tasked with investigating fraud, corruption and other irregularities, introducing new constitutions, registering eligible members and conducting Special General Meetings and Annual General Meetings.

The Cycling Transformation Committee will be chaired by Anura Mahaarachchi, while the Sri Lanka Badminton Transformation Committee will be headed by M.H.S.S. Kusum Kumara.

Both committees have been authorized to manage the respective organizations until new office bearers are elected.

The Gazettes require elections to be held within 90 days of the registration of the new constitutions.

The Cycling Federation notification also revokes the Extraordinary Gazette issued on August 21, 2025, with immediate effect. (Newswire)
