Sri Lanka ends Asian Games with three medals, extends gold-medal streak

Sri Lanka finished the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya with three medals — one gold, one silver and one bronze — extending the country’s run of winning at least one gold medal at two consecutive editions of the Games.

Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage won the men’s javelin gold medal, while Sri Lanka’s women’s cricket team secured silver and the men’s cricket team won bronze.

The three-medal haul was lower than Sri Lanka’s five-medal performance at the 2022 Asian Games in Hangzhou, where the country won one gold, two silver and two bronze medals.

Sri Lanka’s strongest Asian Games performances by total medals came at Bangkok in 1966, Bangkok in 1998 and Busan in 2002, with six medals at each edition.

The 1998 Bangkok Games remain Sri Lanka’s most successful edition in terms of gold medals, with three golds and three bronze medals. The country also won two golds, one silver and three bronze medals at Busan in 2002.

Sri Lanka’s first Asian Games gold medal came at Tokyo in 1958, when Nagalingam Ethirveerasingam won the men’s high jump. Athletics subsequently produced several strong performances, including two gold medals at Bangkok in 1970 and two at Tehran in 1974.

The country’s medal tally declined considerably in later editions. Sri Lanka won no medals at Guangzhou in 2010 and Jakarta-Palembang in 2018, while its two medals at Incheon in 2014 came through cricket.

The recent results, however, show a return to the medal table. Sri Lanka went from winning no medals in 2018 to five at Hangzhou in 2022 and three at Aichi-Nagoya in 2026.

Athletics has also re-emerged as a source of Asian Games gold medals, with Tharushi Karunarathna winning the women’s 800 metres at Hangzhou and Rumesh Tharanga securing the men’s javelin title at Aichi-Nagoya.

With the three medals won in 2026 added to the Olympic Council of Asia’s pre-Games historical tally, Sri Lanka’s overall Asian Games record stands at 54 medals — 13 gold, 14 silver and 27 bronze.

Although the 2026 total falls short of the country’s six-medal peaks, the consecutive gold-medal performances mark a positive recent trend for Sri Lanka at the Asian Games. (Newswire)
