Sri Lanka launches licensed 5G era with Spectrum Allocation

Sri Lanka has taken a major step forward in its digital transformation with the official awarding of 5G spectrum licences, marking the formal launch of licensed fifth-generation mobile services in the country.

The licences were handed over at a ceremonial event organised by the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka (TRCSL) under the patronage of the Ministry of Digital Economy, signalling a key milestone in the government’s digital economy roadmap.

The rollout of 5G is expected to play a central role in advancing Sri Lanka’s digital economy, enabling high-speed connectivity, ultra-low latency and improved network reliability. The technology is set to support next-generation applications across sectors including industry, healthcare, education, logistics, smart cities and public services, while also creating new opportunities for innovation and entrepreneurship.

Dialog Axiata PLC and Sri Lanka Telecom Mobitel formally received their 5G spectrum licences at the event, confirming their role in deploying and expanding next-generation mobile network infrastructure across the country.

The ceremony was attended by Deputy Minister of Digital Economy Eng. Eranga Weeraratne, TRCSL Chairman Waruna Sri Dhanapala, TRCSL Director General Retired Air Vice Marshal Bandula Herath, Auction Committee Chairman Dr. Sulakshana Jayawardena, Dialog Axiata Group Chief Executive Supun Weerasinghe, and Mobitel Chairman and Director Dr. Mothilal de Silva, along with senior officials and key stakeholders from the telecommunications sector.

Officials said the awarding of 5G spectrum represents a significant step in strengthening Sri Lanka’s digital connectivity and accelerating the country’s transition towards a technology-driven economy. (Newswire)
