The latest meeting of the Sri Lanka–Qatar Joint Labour Committee in Doha centered on strengthening bilateral cooperation in the labour sector, with particular emphasis on formalizing recruitment processes, ensuring ethical and transparent hiring, and enhancing welfare and protection for Sri Lankan workers.
The session was co‑chaired by Sheikha Najwa bint Abdulrahman Al Thani, Undersecretary of Qatar’s Ministry of Labour, and Aruna Hemachandra, Sri Lanka’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Employment.
Discussions also highlighted the need to create more employment opportunities in Qatar for trained and professionally qualified Sri Lankan workers, establish mutual recognition of professional qualifications, and strengthen coordination between relevant institutions of both countries.
Practical issues faced by Sri Lankan workers in Qatar were reviewed, with both sides stressing the importance of maintaining an effective forward process through the Joint Labour Committee.
Sri Lanka’s Ambassador to Qatar Sithara Khan, Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism Sugath Yalegama, and Foreign Employment Bureau Director General S.M.S.D. Gunasinghe were among the Sri Lankan delegation present.
Marking 50 years of diplomatic relations between Sri Lanka and Qatar, the meeting is expected to translate the long‑standing friendship into practical outcomes, including expanded job opportunities, skill enhancement, fair recruitment practices, and stronger protection of workers’ rights through enhanced cooperation.
