Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ananda Wijepala represented Sri Lanka at the inaugural BIMSTEC Home Ministers’ Meeting held in New Delhi, India, on October 13.
The meeting, chaired by Indian Union Home Minister Amit Shah, brought together representatives of Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Thailand. It adopted the Delhi Declaration, outlining measures to strengthen regional security and law enforcement cooperation.
Addressing the meeting, Wijepala highlighted Sri Lanka’s efforts to combat crime, strengthen law enforcement coordination and tackle drug-related threats through prevention, enforcement, rehabilitation and community engagement.
He stressed the need for stronger cooperation among BIMSTEC member states to address cross-border threats, including drug trafficking, cybercrime, financial crime, human trafficking and migrant smuggling.
The Delhi Declaration calls for enhanced information-sharing, specialised training and coordinated action against terrorism, transnational organised crime and other regional security threats.
The meeting was preceded by a gathering of BIMSTEC senior officials responsible for home affairs on October 12. (Newswire)
