Sri Lanka rolls out digital bus fare payment system on SLTB routes

Sri Lanka on Thursday rolled out a digital electronic bus fare payment system for state-run buses, marking a key step in the government’s push to modernize public transport services.

The pilot project was launched by the Ministry of Transport, Highways and Urban Development with advisory support from the Digital Economy Ministry and is being implemented on buses operated by the Sri Lanka Transport Board.

The system allows passengers to pay fares using electronic cards, with officials saying no additional charges will be imposed for card-based payments. Passengers will continue to pay only the standard fare for their journey.

The initiative was officially launched at the Makumbura Multimodal Transport Centre under the patronage of SLTB Chairman Engineer Sajeev Kanakaratne.

Authorities said the project aims to improve transparency between passengers and conductors, strengthen public transport operations and enhance passenger convenience. Observations made during the pilot phase will be used to further refine and expand the system, officials added.

The pilot is operational from Wednesday on selected routes, including Makumbura–Galle and Makumbura–Embilipitiya. (Newswire)
