Sri Lanka and Thailand have signed two agreements in Bangkok to strengthen bilateral cooperation in the labour sector and facilitate the employment of Sri Lankan workers in Thailand.
The agreements were signed on Monday (14) by Sri Lanka’s Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism Minister Vijitha Herath and Thailand’s Labour Minister Julapun Amornvivat, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The agreements provide a framework to formalise the process of employing and retaining Sri Lankan workers in Thailand while safeguarding their rights, welfare and protection.
Thailand’s Cabinet has approved the initial recruitment of 10,000 Sri Lankan workers under the established legal framework to address labour shortages in the country, according to the ministry.
The memorandum of understanding provides a framework for cooperation in labour policies and practices, labour market information, skills development, labour productivity and worker protection, as well as preventing illegal recruitment and human trafficking.
The agreements are expected to facilitate safe, orderly and mutually beneficial labour mobility between the two countries.
Herath expressed appreciation to the Thai government for providing employment opportunities for Sri Lankan workers and stressed the importance of ensuring their rights, welfare and social protection. (Newswire)
