Sri Lanka unveils National Action Plan to Develop Inclusive and Sustainable Business Capacities for SDGs

Marking a significant milestone in the journey towards transforming the business landscape in Sri Lanka, the Sustainable Development Council (SDC) in collaboration with the Ministry of Industries launched the Action Plan to Develop Inclusive and Sustainable Business Capacities in Sri Lanka to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) on August 27, during the National SDG Forum held in Colombo.

The Action Plan was developed by the SDC in partnership with the Ministry of Industries, with technical support of the Trade, Investment and Innovation Division of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP).It was developed following the recommendations of the National Strategy to Promote Inclusive and Sustainable Businesses, adopted by the Cabinet of Ministers in February 2024.

The formulation of the Action Plan follows a comprehensive background assessment of current capacities, business coaching services and gaps in the business landscape. The Action Plan aims to increase the competitiveness of Sri Lanka in global markets by developing the capacities of businesses to adopt, scale and operate inclusive and sustainable business practices.

The Action Plan maps out activities to develop individual, organisational and ecosystem capacities to promote and develop Inclusive and Sustainable Businesses. The planned capacity development activities are built around 6 thematic areas: certification, accreditation and impact reporting, branding and recognition, access to finance and investment, engaging low-income and vulnerable groups, building green business opportunities, value chain development and export readiness.

Advisor to the President on Climate Change and Green Finance, Dr. Ananda Mallawatantri, Secretary to the Ministry of Education Thilaka Jayasundera, Chairman of Export Development Board, Dr. Kingsley Bernard, Director General of the Department of Development Finance Malarmathy Ganghadaran, Director General of the Central Environmental Authority, Hemantha Jayasinghe, Executive Director of the UN Global Compact Network Sri Lanka Rathika de Silva, Secretary General, Ceylon Chambers of Commerce Buwaneka Perera, President of the Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry. Keerthi Gunawardhane, Secretary General of the National Chamber of Commerce Nilupul Chandrasena, Chairperson of Sri Lanka Bank’s Association Bingumal Thewarathantri, Country Director of the Asian Development Bank Resident Mission of Sri Lanka Takafumi Kodono, Chief Representative of JICA Sri Lanka Tetsuya Yamada and other senior representatives from relevant government agencies, business chambers and industry collectives and bilateral and multilateral development agencies joined the launch of the Action Plan by the Director General of SDC, Chamindry Saparamadu.
