Sri Lanka’s Ambassador to France Sugeeshwara Gunaratna met French President Emmanuel Macron at the Élysée Palace after presenting his Letters of Credence, with discussions focusing on further strengthening bilateral relations and expanding cooperation between the two countries.
During the brief meeting, Ambassador Gunaratna conveyed the greetings and best wishes of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake to President Macron and highlighted the longstanding relations between Sri Lanka and France.
The Ambassador expressed Sri Lanka’s interest in further expanding cooperation with France in political, economic, trade, maritime and cultural sectors, as well as through multilateral fora.
President Macron extended his greetings to the President, Government and people of Sri Lanka and reaffirmed France’s commitment to further strengthening ties and multifaceted cooperation with Sri Lanka.
Both sides also noted the significance of President Macron’s visit to Sri Lanka in July 2023, describing it as an important catalyst in reinvigorating bilateral relations.
Ambassador Gunaratna presented his Letters of Credence to President Macron at the Élysée Palace on Monday (05).
He had earlier presented the open copy of his Letter of Credence to Mathieu Carmona, Deputy Director of State Protocol and Diplomatic Events at the French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs, on July 2 after assuming duties in Paris as Ambassador-designate and Permanent Delegate to UNESCO.
A career diplomat with more than 25 years of service, Gunaratna previously served as Sri Lanka’s Ambassador to Ethiopia and Permanent Representative to the African Union, Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York and Deputy High Commissioner to the United Kingdom.
He has also held diplomatic positions at the Sri Lanka High Commission in New Delhi and the Permanent Mission of Sri Lanka to the United Nations in Geneva. (Newswire)
