Sri Lankan ambassador visits Anojan Sivarasa at Dammam prison

Sri Lankan Ambassador to Saudi Arabia O. L. Ameer Ajwad visited Anojan Sivarasa at Dammam Central Prison on Oct. 8 to inquire about his well-being and current status, the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Riyadh said.

The prison is located about 450 kilometres from the Saudi capital, Riyadh.

Anojan Sivarasa is a 27-year-old Sri Lankan who was employed in Saudi Arabia, and arrested over a comment posted on social media that was deemed insulting to Prophet Muhammad.

Efforts have been intensifying to secure clemency for Sivarasa, who is now facing a death sentence over the social media post.

During the visit, the ambassador held discussions with Sivarasa, listened to his needs and concerns, and reaffirmed the embassy’s commitment to providing consular and legal assistance under the guidance of Sri Lanka’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism.

The Embassy said that Ajwad also shared his contact details with Sivarasa to facilitate direct communication.

Following the meeting, the ambassador said Sivarasa was in good health and that Saudi prison authorities were attending to his well-being.

Ajwad also met with the director of Dammam Central Prison and the prison’s medical doctor, thanking them for facilitating the visit and for the care provided to Sivarasa.

The embassy is also assisting Sivarasa with his appeal process before the Supreme Court, according to the statement. (Newswire)
