Sri Lankan gets 8 months in UK prison for sexual assault, barred from sitting next to women

A 39-year-old Sri Lankan man has been sentenced to eight months in prison in the United Kingdom after being convicted over a sexual assault on a woman travelling on a train to Manchester.

According to British media reports, the incident occurred while the woman was travelling by train from Stoke-on-Trent to Manchester.

The man had reportedly sat next to the woman before exposing himself and engaging in a sexual act. The woman became aware of what was happening after he made physical contact with her and told him to stop.

He was later arrested by British Transport Police and prosecuted over the incident.

The man was sentenced to eight months in prison following proceedings at Manchester Crown Court.

In addition to the prison sentence, he was reportedly made subject to a 10-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order, which includes restrictions on sitting next to women he does not know while using public transport.

He will also be subject to sex offender notification requirements for 10 years. (Newswire)
