Environment Minister Dr. Dammika Patabendi has opened a new forest museum at the Kande Ela Educational Forest Park in Nuwara Eliya.
The museum was opened on September 26 during a field visit by the minister, with Conservator General of Forests S.C. Palamakumbura and other state officials also attending.
According to the Environment Ministry, the museum showcases the 139-year history of the Forest Department, its role in forest conservation and a collection of historical material linked to forestry in Sri Lanka.
The exhibits include equipment, maps, uniforms, documents and other items used by the Forest Department over the years. The museum is intended to preserve the department’s historical heritage while educating visitors about forest conservation.
The Kande Ela Educational Forest Park covers around 30 acres near the Kande Ela Reservoir, about 12 kilometres from Nuwara Eliya along the Nuwara Eliya–Pattipola road.
The park offers visitors an opportunity to experience Sri Lanka’s montane forest environment, including its native plants, birds, butterflies and other wildlife, while promoting environmentally responsible tourism.
The ministry said further development of the park is aimed at strengthening public participation in forest conservation, generating state revenue and expanding nature-based tourism opportunities. (Newswire)
