Sri Lanka’s hopes of a medal in women’s T20 cricket were dashed when New Zealand defeated them by 45 runs in a group B clash at Edgbaston on Monday night.
The Black Caps romped to 147 propelled by run-a-ball knocks from Sophie Devine (24) and Suzie Bates (34). Sri Lanka were never in the chase after skipper Chamari Atapattu fell for a fourth ball duck to finish on 102 for eight despite a valiant knock of 36 from Nilakshika Silva. Hayley Jensen claimed three for five from four overs.
England and New Zealand both secured their places in the semi-finals. with victories over South Africa and Sri Lanka respectively.
Sri Lanka will meet South Africa in a match of academic interest with only the top two teams qualifying for the semifinals and medals in the eight-team competition.
Dulanjan Fernando will take part in the 1m Springboard Diving competition while rhythmic gymnast Anna-Marie Ondaatje will begin her campaign at Arena Birmingham today (Thursday).
