The first ever statue of the founder of the modern Buddhist revival in India, Ven. Siri Devamitta Dharmapala Thera was unveiled jointly by President of the Sri Lanka Maha Bodhi Society Ven. Banagala Upatissa Thera and Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena at Maligakanda Agrasrawaka Maha Vihara premises, Colombo yesterday.
The Prime Minister offer flowers along with Ven. Banagala Upatissa Thera to the statue of Siri Devamitta Dharmapala Thera. The Prime Minister also placed the ancient casket in which the ashes of Siri Devamitta Dhammapala Thera in the foundation of the statue. The casket which was buried on April 29, 1933, has been found again at the site of Maligakanda Agrasravaka Maha Vihara premises when the construction work of Siri Devamitta Dhammapala Thera’s statue was being carried out.
