Stents using old technology removed on specialist Doctors advice – Minister

Health Minister Keheliya Rambukwella said a batch of stents manufactured using outdated technology had to be removed from use since only stents manufactured with the latest technology are used for heart patients in the country.

The Minister also said that when new products using novel technology are introduced, products manufactured with old technology are removed from use for patients.

Accordingly, stents manufactured using outdated technology will not be used on heart patients for surgeries carried out in government hospitals.

He said that even specialist doctors, who carry out surgeries are reluctant to treat patients by using stents with old technology when a new technological product is introduced.

“In this way, due to having to provide stents with new technology, sometimes stents made with outdated technology have to be removed from use,” he added. He made these remarks while a journalist questioned the Minister whether 3,000 stents at the Colombo National Hospital have been removed from use as they have expired.

The Minister responding to the issue said medical specialists are reluctant to use stents which are made with old technology which are currently in the stores of the Colombo National Hospital and other hospitals. Therefore, according to the request of the specialist doctors, steps were taken to provide stents made with the latest technology.
