Steps taken to remove fungus from Dambulla cave paintings

Director General of Archaeology Dr. Gamini Ranasinghe says that the Central Cultural Fund has taken steps to remove the fungus that is growing on the paintings in the Dambulla historical cave temple and other places. He also stated that in order to prevent the damage, measures will have to be taken to limit the entry of tourists into these caves.

Dr. Ranasinghe further stated that the cause for the spread of fungi was due to the lack of proper ventilation in the caves and the humid environment. The breath of the visitors in the caves augment the spread of fungi. Conservation of cave paintings using modern techniques is now in the final stage, he said.

Twenty-two specially trained personnel are working to remove or control the spreading fungus and preserve the paintings.

The Director General said that he had to decide reluctantly to restrict the number of people entering the caves, and also requested that talking in the caves should be reduced and unnecessary dumping of garbage should be avoided.

Local and foreign tourists are also requested to support the conservation of the cave paintings for future generations.
