Steps to cultivate 61,075 hectares of keeri samba paddy this yala season

 

The Department of Agrarian Development informed that 61,075 hectares of keeri samba rice has been cultivated in this year’s yala season.

The Department of Agrarian Development emphasized these points in a discussion held by the Minister of Agriculture and Plantation Industries Mr. Mahinda Amaraweera yesterday (22) to investigate the progress of paddy cultivation in the yala season.

There was a shortage of Keeri Samba rice in the country in the past days. Because of this, the government even decided to import substitute rice on behalf of the keeri samba rice. Keeri Samba rice is the type of rice that is widely used by tourists as well as hotels in this country. But due to the shortage of Keeri Samba rice, the prices also increased.

Taking this matter into consideration, the Department of Agriculture has planned to grow Keeri Samba paddy in more paddy lands this year and the Minister of Agriculture and Plantation Industry Mr. Mahinda Amaraweera instructed the officials to take measures for this.

Accordingly, a harvest of 248,000 metric tons is expected from Keeri Samba rice cultivation this yala season.

The Department of Agrarian Development emphasized that the 263,122 hectares of Nadu (white), 94,027 hectares of Nadu (red), 27,268 hectares of Samba (white), 3612.8 hectares of Samba (red) and 1034 hectares of traditional rice were cultivated in this yala season. The total paddy cultivated lands is 450,138 hectares and the Department of Agrarian Development has highlighted this progress in the review discussion.
