STF War Heroes Day Commemoration at Katukurunda tomorrow

A Ranaviru Celebration will be held on September 1 at the Katukurunda Special Task Force Training School in parallel with the celebration of the fortieth anniversary of the Police Special Task Force.

The black smoke of thirty years of brutal war has disappeared and now a beautiful morning has come from the blood and sweat of those brave warriors.

During the terrorist war in the North East, 464 Special Task Force soldiers and six civil servants sacrificed their lives for the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the motherland. Similarly, 774 soldiers were injured and became totally disabled.

On September 1, 1984, a truck carrying officers of the Police Special Task Force was attacked by the LTTE in the Tikam area towards Jaffna. The first four members of the Special Task Force were caught in a landmine hidden by terrorists and breathed their last for the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the motherland. The four Police Sergeants were R Chandrapala, P.A. Ekanayake, L.D. Nanayakkara and Police Sergeant Driver H.D. Sumanasekara. While four officers died and eleven others were injured when they were caught in a terrorist bomb attack, showing the brutality of war.

This event is named as Special Task Force War Heroes Day and till now every war hero of the Police Special Task Force is remembered here for the motherland. Parents, wives, children and relatives will participate in the main celebration of the war heroes.

Here, school equipment for education is to be distributed to the children of the soldiers who sacrificed their lives in the Special Task Force.

The main ceremony of this Ranaviru celebration will be held on September 01, 2024 at the Katukurunda Special Task Force Training School and on the same day and same time at Kataragama and at the monument of the Ampara camp and at the Jaya Sri Maha Bodiya and the monument of the Anuradhapura camp.Also, on September 03, at Sri Dalada Palace on the historic mountain, in memory of the war heroes, an alms giving is done to pay tribute, at the temple of the tooth relic.
