MP Nimal Lanza on Wednesday requested that the approval given by the Sri Lanka Land Development Corporation for reclamations in the Ja-Ela region of the Muthurajawela highly sensitive ecosystem be suspended immediately.
“On what basis did the Sri Lanka Land Development Corporation approve land reclamation in the Muthurajawela High Sensitive Environmental Zone when the Regional Development
Committee and the District Coordinating Committee did not grant approval at any time?”, he queried.
The MP said that three District Development Committees had given instructions to stop the reclamation in the Muthurajawela High Sensitive Zone. He added that the arbitrary actions of a few people cannot be allowed any longer.
“We express our strong displeasure for doing this despite the opposition from all quarters, including the Catholic Church, religious leaders, environmental organizations, and the public and objections from all fields”, he said. The actions of the Sri Lanka Land Development Corporation to engage in these activities without informing at least the minister in charge is a serious wrongdoing. Until President Ranil
Wickremesinghe, Minister Prasanna Ranatunga and the parliamentary sub-committees are informed about this and relevant measures are taken, temporarily suspend the reclamation.
