Strengthen the mandate you gave us at the Presidential Election – President

President Anura Kumara Dissanayake stated that politicians could not act as they wish and need to respect the law. He was speaking at a campaign rally in Wellawaya for the upcoming Parliamentary Elections.

He added, “There has been heavy rainfall over the past few days. However, while Monaragala received rain, Wellawaya rallied the people. The thousands of people present here today during this heavy rain are showing their commitment to continuing the changes initiated in the Presidential Election with a stronger step forward on November 14.

“In Sri Lankan history, people have fought against oppression for long periods. You may recall that on March 2, 1815, the Kandyan Accord was signed, leading to the cession of our country to foreign invaders. However, the people resisted through the 1818 uprising, known as the Wellassa Rebellion, where our ancestors fought for their rights, heritage and sovereignty. Unfortunately, we could not end it in victory. Many leaders of the rebellion were killed by colonial forces. In 1848, another fight for freedom began in Matale, but it too ended in defeat. After a long struggle against oppression, even after 1948, our youth fought for their rights, but all those struggles ended in defeat. For over two centuries, citizens fought against this oppression, often facing defeat.

“However, in the recent Presidential Election, the people managed to end an era dominated by a few families who exploited and destroyed the wealth of our country and the future of our children, and they ushered in an era for the common people. Now, we ask, will we give up this victory easily? No. On November 14, we can assure you that this victory will be strengthened further. We are confident that a large number of those who did not vote in the Presidential Election will support us in the Parliamentary Election on November 14.”
