Strong 4.8 magnitude earthquake shakes Melbourne

A 4.8 magnitude earthquake struck east of Melbourne early Saturday, shaking residents across a wide area of Victoria.

According to Geoscience Australia, the earthquake occurred at about 2.01 a.m. at a depth of 10 kilometres.

The epicentre was reported near Arawata, northwest of Leongatha in South Gippsland, about 130 kilometres east of Melbourne.

More than 15,000 people had submitted reports to Geoscience Australia indicating they felt the earthquake, with the number continuing to rise.

Reports of shaking came from across Melbourne and surrounding areas, extending east toward Traralgon, north to Mansfield and west to Geelong and Torquay.

Some residents described being awakened by strong shaking, with one Melbourne resident saying the tremor lasted about 10 seconds and caused their house to move.

There were no immediate reports of injuries.
