Frontline Socialist Party (FSP) Propaganda Secretary Duminda Nagamuwa said the Railway Department and the Sri Lanka Transport Board can profit by cancelling the train and SLTB season tickets of schoolchildren and government employees. Addressing a public meeting, he said that the train season ticket system should be abolished and the train ticket fee should be brought to the same level as the bus fare.
He said that then the Railway Department can be brought to the point of profit as soon as possible. He also said:Today, some people say that all these will be sold. The Railway Department is making losses. The revenue of the Railway Department is Rs.11 billion. The cost is Rs.40 billion. The Railway Department can make profit. The season given to schoolchildren should be cancelled, the seasons given to government employees should be cancelled, and the price of the train ticket should be reduced to the price of a bus ticket. By doing this, the Railway Department can earn profit. SLTB can also be brought to a profit-making level. The seasons given to schoolchildren and the seasons given to Government employees should be cancelled. “The day a train strike takes place, the man who uses a season ticket says that the Department should be privatised. The way railway strikes are carried out is also not very good. That’s a different story. He further said that while travelling on the train with a season ticket, people say it should be privatised.
