Students from Grade 8 to get opportunity to study AI from March 19

Students from Grade Eight and above will have the opportunity to study Artificial Intelligence (AI) with Information Technology (IT) from March 19.

Education Minister Dr. Susil Premajayantha said that in the future, every child in the country will be provided with the necessary background to achieve their future goals according to their abilities and preferences.

The Minister expressed these views while participating in a programme conducted at the Education Ministry yesterday.

He also emphasized that moves are under way to bring down the pressure given by the parents to the children in the primary education section from Grade 1 to 5 especially to the students studying in Grade 5. Accordingly, the way of Grade 5 scholarship examination should be rearranged. He noted that even though the Grade 5 scholarship examination will be held in the future, necessary background will be prepared to reduce its competitiveness.

In order to evaluate the Grade 5 students, the skills shown by them for activities outside the classroom will be identified and steps will be taken to give evaluations for those soft skills.

He also said that the opportunity to study artificial intelligence with the subject of Information Technology will be provided for children from the Grade 8 and above. A pilot project in this regard will be started on March 19 at 20 schools. He said that the training of teachers for that has already been started by now aiming to implement nationwide in the coming year.

Besides, the current number of subjects in the G.C.E Ordinary Level Examination will be reduced to seven subjects and steps will be taken to evaluate the remaining three subjects based on industry and environmental knowledge that can be given to students based on the area they live.

The Minister said that steps will be taken to prepare the necessary background to get professional training in the subject areas of their interest and skills in such a way that no child fails in the G.C.E Ordinary Level or G.C.E Advanced Level Examinations in the future.

He further stated that out of the 337,000 students who appeared for the Advanced Level Examination this year, 50,000 students will be given training in English, Information Technology and Career Guidance. This training programme will be held in 300 centres across the country from March 19.
