Students to get Suraksha Insurance for three years

The Education Ministry will provide insurance coverage for up to three years to all government school students with an investment of Rs.7,112 million. Education Minister Dr. Susil Premajayantha said that for a period of three years beginning from yesterday (1), the “Suraksha Student Insurance (Suraksha Sisu Rakshanaya) will be provided to all students studying in government schools, all government approved private schools and specialised schools. The Minister expressed these views at the signing of the agreement between the Education Ministry and the Sri Lanka Insurance Corporation to implement this insurance coverage yesterday.

Education Ministry Secretary Thilaka Jayasundara signed the agreement on behalf of the Education Ministry and Sri Lanka Insurance Corporation Chief Operating Officer Priyantha Perera signed the agreement.

The Minister said the Education Ministry has set apart Rs.7,112 million for this.This insurance covers Rs.300,000 as benefits for in-patient treatment in government or private hospitals and Rs.20,000 for out patient care and Rs.1,500,000 as critical illness benefits. Also, the accident insurance provides benefits of Rs.200,000 in case of complete permanent disability, Rs.150,000 in case of permanent partial disability and Rs.25,000 to Rs.100,000 in case of temporary disability. In addition to students from families with an annual income of less than Rs.180,000 under life insurance or students from families belonging to the ‘Aswasuma’ programme will receive benefits of Rs.75,000 per student in case of death of a parent or legal guardian.

The maximum amount allocated per death is Rs.225,000 and the amount is divided equally among all the students in the family. Minister Premajayantha further stated that this insurance is available separately for the death of both parents or the legal guardian.

Students will get a free card for this insurance and it is also special that this insurance is digitised.
