Suspect arrested while attempting to sell protected sea shells for Rs. 1.5 Mn

A suspect has been arrested in Maharagama for allegedly attempting to sell protected sea shells valued at Rs. 1.5 million, the Department of Wildlife Conservation said.

The arrest was made during a raid conducted by wildlife officers following information received by the Horagolla National Park headquarters on October 4 regarding an alleged sea shell trafficking operation.

Wildlife officers recovered six shells of Cassis cornutus, referred to as “Lanka Map Shells,” along with shells belonging to another 18 invertebrate sea snails from the suspect, a resident of Maharagama.

The shells had allegedly been prepared for sale for Rs. 1.5 million.

The suspect and the seized items are due to be produced before the Gangodawila Magistrate’s Court on October 8.

The Wildlife Department said the possession, display, transportation and trade of shells belonging to protected sea snails are prohibited under the Fauna and Flora Protection Ordinance, adding that action would be taken against those involved in such illegal trade. (Newswire)
