A suspect was arrested with a hand grenade on Thursday (16), after he attacked two Police officers of the Giriulla Police and stabbed one of them in the back when they attempted to enforce the law against him for drunken driving.
The person who was taken into custody named Ruvith Pathirana (24), a resident of Hamangalla, Narangoda.The two Police Sergeants who were attacked and the one who was stabbed, are hospitalised at the Dambadeniya Hospital and were receiving treatment.
This incident had taken place on November 15 when the two Sergeants of the traffic division were engaged in duty on the Hamangalla road. They had signalled a three-wheeler which arrived from Dambadeniya to stop, for an inspection.
Police said that the three-wheeler driver had ignored and driven away at high speed. Then the two officers had chased after him on a motorbike. Subsequent to much effort, they had managed to halt the three-wheeler in Kohilawala.
Police officers had found that not only the driver of the three-wheeler but the three persons travelling as passengers were all drunk.
