Suspect remanded till December 1

The senior official of the Kandy Municipal Council (KMC) Finance Department who was earlier interdicted for allegedly taking Rs.5.1 million received by the Municipal Council to spend on her daughter’s wedding without crediting it in the MC’s official account, has been remanded until December 1 by the court. She was earlier arrested by the Police.

The arrest came following recent media exposure about the fraud. In relation to this financial fraud, a group of people, including the accountant of the municipality, had submitted a complaint to the Kandy Police, but the Police failed to arrest the suspect until more than a month after the incident. Earlier a special investigation had been initiated on the instructions of Municipal Commissioner Ishan Wijethilaka over the alleged incident.

After checking the accounts and files related to the money received as payments to the Municipal Council, it was found that there was a deficit of Rs. 5.1 million and an investigation had been initiated.
