Leader of the House and Education Minister Dr. Susil Premajayanth said in Parliament yesterday that suspects should not be brought before the media and questioned.
He said this when Opposition MPs questioned the conduct of the Police regarding a video being shared on social media in relation to a confession made by a tattoo shop owner in connection with the murder of Surendra Wasantha Perera, alias ‘Club Wasantha’ yesterday in Parliament.
The Minister further said it is wrong to show the Police interrogating the suspects through the media. “This is totally wrong. Criminal law has been made a joke,” he said.
“Today’s underworld activities have created an impact and fear on ordinary people’s day-to-day lives. Today, the media shows videos of a confession made by suspects. When serious crimes are committed, interrogating suspects by Police should not be publicised. The criminal law of our country has become a joke today. Do not allow people to lose their respect for the law. All these factors have led to the increase in crime in this country,” the Minister said.
Chief Opposition Whip Lakshman Kiriella said such things are done to free the accused. When this confession is presented to the Court, the accused is freed, he said.
Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa also said that a clear and sustainable solution is needed to curb the existing violence in the country.
