Suspects in spate of robberies arrested

The Criminal Investigation Division of the Wattala Police has succeeded in arresting three persons, including the main suspect, involved in the theft of gold jewellery, laptops, mobile phones and cash worth around Rs. 14 lakhs by breaking into houses in Wattala, Minuwangoda, Kiribathgoda.

Acting on a tip-off, the main suspect was arrested with 7,200 mg of heroin near the Wattala–Hekitta intersection on Saturday (4).

During questioning of the main suspect, he divulged that gold ornaments worth about Rs. 3 lakhs and cash of Rs. 20,000 were stolen from a house in Minuwangoda, and an iPhone worth around Rs. 250,000 was stolen from a house in Kiribathgoda. Further, an iPhone worth about Rs. 5 lakhs and a watch worth Rs. 1 lakh were stolen from another house in Kiribathgoda.

Police investigations revealed that the gang also stole two mobile phones worth about Rs. 55,000 by breaking into a house in Wattala. They were sold for Rs. 30,000.

The main suspect is a resident of Kiribathgoda with previous convictions and has been identified as a drug trafficker. The other suspects have been identified as two Colombo businessmen who intended to sell the stolen mobile phones.

The suspects were to be presented to the Wattala Magistrate’s Court yesterday (5) and the further investigations will be handed over to the Kiribathgoda Police.
