Tamils will gain nothing through communalism-based politics: Douglas

A group of Tamil politicians representing racial politics and ethnic distinctions have been hoodwinking Tamils in the North and East, to secure their votes. I wish to warn those Tamils caught in this trap of believing the falsehood of these hypocritical politicians that the Government will think twice before implementing various development programmes in the two provinces, Fisheries Minister Douglas Devananda said at the ceremony to commission the reconstruction of the Veravil–Pallivarayan Kattu Road in Jaffna, which connects to the A32 main road.

The Minister said that these so-called politicians, instead of canvassing for development in the peninsula, such as repairing the dilapidated Veravil–Pallivarayan road, blame the Government, pretending to the Tamils that the Jaffna people are denied development and receiving step-motherly treatment in retaliation.

It is the duty of the Tamil politicians to identify the burning problems of the Tamil community as a whole, and seek the full-scale support of the incumbent Government to remedy them, he said.

The Fisheries Minister reiterated that without doing so in a people-friendly manner, these politicians are engaged in misguiding and deceiving the Tamils, with two-faced and double-dealing policies.

Their objectives have always been based on rekindling communal differences, to retain their political authority for their continued survival, Minister Devananda said.

Although 14 years have passed since the end of the 30-year war, the power-hungry politicians still choose to thrive on spreading communalism in the North and East to ensure their continued leadership.

The Tamils must decide before it is too late, to ignore the hypocritical, selfish politicians engaged in narrow-minded, racial politics since independence, and join hands with the majority to settle their differences, and regain their hereditary rights in an acceptable democratic manner, Minister Devananda said.
