Tax relief for dates during Ramadan requested

Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) Central Committee member and Colombo District organiser Fawzan Anwer urged authorities to provide tax relief for dates, mainly donated by Saudi Arabia and other Muslim countries during the period of Ramadan, when Muslims observe a strict fast from dawn to dusk.

He pointed out that in the previous year as well the Government decided to reduce the special import levy of Rs. 200 imposed per kilo of dates to Rs. 1.

The tax had been reduced by Rs. 199 as a relief measure for Muslims during the Ramadan fasting period, he said. Anwer said the dates donated are normally delivered to the registered mosques in the country and the mosques distribute them to the devotees with a special focus on the needy. Thus he urged authorities to follow the measures taken in the previous year and provide tax relief for dates donated during upcoming Ramadan period.

Saudi Arabia in the previous year handed over 50 tons of dates to Sri Lanka during the Ramadan period, he recalled.
