Teacher in postal ballot paper mix up gets bail

A school teacher from Kandy who accidentally inserted the candidates list in the postal vote envelope instead of her marked ballot paper and  was later arrested by the Kandy police on the charge of taking the marked ballot paper out of the polling station has been released on police bail.

This 53-year-old teacher who resides in Matale had come to cast her postal vote recently at Wariyapola Sri Sumangala College, Kandy. Investigations revealed that she kept the official ballot paper in her possession and inserted the candidates list in the postal vote envelope.

The teacher, who had gone home after the postal voting had found her marked ballot paper inside her handbag. She had gone to the school immediately and informed the principal about the mistake she had made and handed over the ballot paper. The principal had informed election officials in this regard as it is an offence under the election law to carry away the ballot paper.

After a complaint made to the Kandy police by the Kandy assistant chief election officer, the police arrested her under the violation of section 66 E and U of the Election Act.

She had admitted that it was due to a mistake and Kandy police said that she was released on police bail subject to the condition of appearing in Court when notified.
