A 16-year-old student who was taking part in a marathon at the inter-house sports meet at Thirukkovil Methodist Central School in Ampara district died on Monday (11) following a sudden illness.
A senior Police officer said that the marathon was held on Monday morning and the student who fell ill was admitted to Thirukkovil Hospital and after being given basic treatment, he was transferred to Akkaraipattu Hospital where he died.
A heated situation arose at the Thirukkovil Hospital when the parents and students protested noting that the treatment given to the student immediately after he fell was inadequate.
Some people had started pelting stones at the hospital and the Police had to be called in to diffuse the situation.
