Thirty passengers injured in Welikanda accident

A private bus ran off the road and hit a tree, on the Welikanda-Sinhapura main road, at Welikanda-Sinhapura Muthuella junction eighth post yesterday (30) morning and thirty passengers were admitted to the Welikanda Hospital, subsequent to sustaining injuries.

A private bus belonging to a private factory, was involved in this accident while plying from Welikanda to Sinhapura area.

Thirty people were injured in the accident, and the condition of four of them is serious, according to hospital sources.

Thirty of the injured were admitted to the Welikanda Base Hospital and were then transferred to the Polonnaruwa General Hospital for further treatment. Seven people are receiving treatment at the Welikanda Base Hospital and the other injured have been discharged from Welikanda Hospital, subsequent to receiving treatment, according to the Welikanda Police.

Seventeen injured women are receiving treatment at Polonnaruwa General Hospital. The accident had taken place due to the carelessness and high speed of the bus driver, when the bus had veered off the road and collided with a tree, according to Police sources.

Officer-In-Charge of the Welikanda Police Chief Inspector of Police, R. Ratnayake, Police Sergeant Rathna Malala and other Police officers are conducting investigations into the accident based on the instructions of Polonnaruwa Senior Superintendent of Police Nishantha De Silva.
