Three arrested for assault on Wattegama doctor

Police arrested three persons including a development officer of the Animal Production and Health Department on Sunday (24) afternoon on suspicion of assaulting and injuring a doctor at the Wattegama Hospital.

The three suspects, after being brought before Teldeniya Magistrate Devika D. Jayawardena, were remanded until October 2.

According to the police, six people have been arrested in connection with the incident.

Based on the information that the development officer was present at the time of the attack, he was arrested by the police.

Hospital staff have walked away from all but emergency care services for three days to protest the attack.

Investigations are being conducted under the direction of Wattegama OIC Chief Inspector Kapila Bandara regarding the incident. The doctor who was attacked is receiving treatment in Ward 10 of the Kandy National Hospital.
