Three candidates who contested the 2024 Presidential Election have failed to submit their election campaign income and expenditure reports to the Election Commission.
Elections Commissioner General Saman Sri Ratnayake said that Presidential Candidates Ven. Battaramulle Seelarathana Thera, former Member of Parliament Sarath Keerthirathna, and common candidate Pakkiyaselvam Ariyanethiran have failed to submit their election campaign income and expenditure reports by the deadline given by the Election Commission, which was required to be submitted according to 2023 Number 03 Section 03 of the Election Expenditure Regulatory Act.
The deadline of 21 days for Presidential Election candidates to handover their election campaign income and expenditure reports to the Election Commission from the day the election results were announced ended at 12.00 midnight on Sunday, October 13, 2024.The Election Commission said that out of the 38 Presidential candidates, 35 have submitted their election campaign income and expenditure reports before the deadline.
The Elections Commissioner General further said that legal action is expected to be taken against the three candidates who did not submit their campaign income and expenditure reports by the deadline.
Candidates who fail to meet the deadline to submit their election campaign income and expenses reports could face penalties under the Presidential Election Act of 1981 with fines reaching up to Rs. 100,000.
