The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) has forwarded concerns over a proposed schedule to broadcast three Tamil films a day on state owned Vasantham TV to the Ministry of Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education for appropriate action.
The action follows an email sent to the Prime Minister on 15 September 2026 by M. Navarathnam, President of the Tamil Artistes Association.
In its official communication, the PMO highlighted that the request raised concerns regarding the potential impact of the proposed broadcast schedule on educational and socially responsible television programming, particularly content suitable for children and youth.
The PMO requested the Ministry Secretary to take appropriate action under existing rules and regulations, notify the requester of the decision without delay, and issue an interim response if a final decision requires more than one month.
In a separate representation, Tamil Progressive Alliance (TPA) Leader Mano Ganesan MP wrote to President Anura Kumara Dissanayake raising concerns over the proposed three films per day format.
In his letter, the MP raised issues concerning Vasantham TV’s public-service mandate, educational and cultural programming, the promotion of local productions, and the treatment of the Tamil-language broadcasting service. He urged the President to review the decision and ensure the channel maintains a balanced broadcast lineup of educational, cultural, locally produced, and public interest content alongside general entertainment.
